Our Commitment
We want Ship Shop to work for everyone, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, rely on voice control, or need more time, more contrast, or less motion on screen. Accessibility is something we keep working on, not a box we checked once.
Conformance Target
Our target is WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard most commonly used to judge web accessibility. We are not there yet across the whole site — we arepartially conformant and actively working toward full conformance. Partially conformant means some parts of the site meet the standard and some don't yet, as described below.
What We've Done
We've completed a focused round of accessibility work, including:
- A visible keyboard focus indicator on links, buttons, and form fields sitewide, so keyboard users can always see where they are.
- A skip-to-content link that lets keyboard users bypass the header on every page.
- An accessible mobile navigation menu with proper focus management — focus moves into the menu when it opens, stays trapped inside it while it's open, and returns to the menu button when it closes.
- Contact form errors that are announced to screen readers as they happen, with each error message linked to its field, and focus moved to a visible confirmation heading on successful submission.
- An accessible AI chat panel on the homepage: a screen-reader log announces each message once it's complete (instead of reading out streaming text token by token), and status updates like "Agent is responding" are announced without interrupting the user.
- Support for video captions, with caption tracks being added to narrated service videos.
- Pause controls for auto-playing content, including the homepage word animation, the service preview videos, and the case-study carousel.
- Minimum touch and click target sizes on small interactive controls like carousel dots.
Known Limitations
We'd rather tell you where we're short than claim otherwise. As of this review:
- Caption support is wired into our service videos, but not every video has a finished caption file yet — we're still producing and reviewing the transcripts.
- We've reviewed fixed pixel dimensions across the site for clipping risk at high browser zoom and increased text spacing, and fixed most of what we found. A small number of fixed page-width layouts are still under review for narrow viewport widths.
- The newsletter signup form is currently disabled sitewide and doesn't accept submissions; it will be reassessed for accessibility when it's reactivated.
- Some third-party embedded content, including our bot-protection challenge (Cloudflare Turnstile), depends on that vendor's own accessibility support, which we don't control directly.
Feedback and Contact
If you hit a barrier anywhere on this site — a page that doesn't work with your screen reader, a control you can't reach by keyboard, text you can't read, or anything else — please tell us. Email hello@shipshop.dev with a description of the problem and the page it's on. We aim to respond within 5 business days.
